Monthly Dog Tip (Jun 2010)

When Your Dog Is Too Anxious

Anxiety in dogs is a fairly common issue and it can be a real problem. Anxious dogs can be destructive or become extremely upset, resulting in distress for both the pet and the owner. Dog separation anxiety is one of the most typical forms of this type of anxiety.

Dogs with separation anxiety feel large amounts of stress when their owner leaves the home or when left alone. Dog anxiety symptoms can include behaviors such as whining, barking, digging and chewing. If not treated, these manifestations of dog separation anxiety can disrupt neighbors and result in the destruction of household objects. Leaving a dog outdoors is not a solution as the behavior can take place regardless of whether the pet is in outside in their Dogloo or indoors on the living room floor.

Luckily, there has been a lot of progress when it comes to treating anxiety in dogs. Some things that can help reduce stress on the dog include entering and leaving the home without a lot of fanfare and starting out with small periods of absence before building up to longer ones. Dogs with separation anxiety also tend to be less stressed when they are tired, so extra exercise often helps.
